Data licences
The Atlas is built from open data. Here is every source, the licence it comes under, and a link to that licence in full. Where a licence asks us to say what we changed, we say it.
Overture Maps Foundation: the rooms
Each room's name, kind, address, website, phone and place on the map. Release 2026-09-23.1. Overture’s attribution page.
- Data from Meta, Microsoft, BrightQuery, RenderSEO and Overture's other contributors: available under the Community Data License Agreement, Permissive, Version 2.0 (CDLA Permissive 2.0).
- Data from Foursquare. Copyright Foursquare Labs, Inc. All rights reserved. Available under the Apache License, Version 2.0. Foursquare data was transformed to the Overture schema by Overture, and changed again by ARIA as described below. Foursquare's notice is in full below.
- Data from AllThePlaces: available under CC0 1.0.
Attribution: Overture Maps Foundation, overturemaps.org.
What we changed. We kept the rooms with a stage, folded two listings of the same room into one, added facts from Wikidata, gave each room an area by its county, and wrote the result into the files this site reads. Bars and thin listings are kept but not shown.

Wikidata: capacities and other facts
Capacities, opening years, other names, and which photo a room uses come from Wikidata, whose data is available under CC0 1.0 (Wikidata’s licensing). A room's page links its Wikidata item.
Wikimedia Commons: the photos
Each photo is credited on its room's page with its author, its licence and a link to its page on Wikimedia Commons. We take only free licences: CC BY and CC BY-SA in any version, CC0, and the public domain; never a licence that forbids commercial use or changes. The credit line links each photo's own licence.
What we changed. Every photo was resized to at most 720 pixels wide, turned upright where its file said so, and saved as WebP. Nothing else. A photo a venue adds is hosted on the venue's own website, or by the site builder its website is made with, and credited as the venue asks.
OpenStreetMap: the roads
The roads on the area maps and in each room's street panel are © OpenStreetMap contributors, through the transportation theme of Overture Maps, and available under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Attribution: © OpenStreetMap contributors, Overture Maps Foundation.
The road files this site draws (one or two for each area, under /assets/atlas/streets/) are a database derived from OpenStreetMap: we kept motorways down to tertiary roads, joined each road's pieces, simplified the lines and cut them by area. We offer those files under the ODbL 1.0 too: you may use them on the same terms. They are kept apart from the rooms, which are not derived from OpenStreetMap.
U.S. Census Bureau: states, counties and areas
State and county boundaries from the Census Bureau's 2024 cartographic boundary files, and the 2023 metro and micro area list the areas are grouped by. Works of the U.S. government are in the public domain. We grouped the counties into areas and simplified the shapes for drawing.
The code that draws the map
- d3-geo 3.1.1, by Mike Bostock: the ISC License. It includes code from GeographicLib, by Charles Karney, under the MIT License. The licence as shipped.
- d3-array 3.2.4, by Mike Bostock: the ISC License. The licence as shipped.
- topojson-client 3.1.0, by Mike Bostock: the ISC License. The licence as shipped.
Each is served from this site, never from anybody else's.
